Memory & Aging
Our ability to remember can change as we age. People are often concerned that they are “losing their memory.” In most cases, this memory loss is due to normal aging. However, in some cases, memory loss is caused by a treatable medical condition. One of these medical conditions is Alzheimer’s disease. In Alzheimer’s disease, there are changes to the hippocampus, an area in the brain that is critical for learning and memory.Today, new treatments are being researched to help slow, or even stop, these detrimental changes.
Other conditions commonly associated with memory loss include:
Alzheimer’s disease- Anxiety
- Depression
- Head injury
- Parkinson’s disease
- Strokes
- Other dementias (Lewy-Body, Pick’s)
- Prolonged anesthesia
- Anoxia (a lack of oxygen to the brain)
- Hormonal imbalance
- Anemia
Additionally, certain medications (or combinations), or substance abuse can contribute to memory loss.
